Traffic in Tehran has long been a major problem in this sprawling metropolitan area of over 10 million residents. The congested urban freeway system got a much needed improvement by connecting two of the major east-west freeways (Sadr and Niyayesh freeways). The two separate tunnels were awarded to the Tablieh–Iran Shahr Joint Venture by the Tehran Municipality in the framework of an EPCF contract.
